France celebrated its’ first official gay marriage today. Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau were wed in a ceremony in Montpellier this afternoon. It was pretty adorable. The Guardian’s got most of the details here. I just hope this makes the stupid homophobes look even dumber at their next rally. Also, if they stopped putting their stupid hate stickers everywhere in Paris, that’d be great.

France says “Oui!” to Marriage Equality!

After months of debates and marches, protests and counter-protests, the French legislature finally voted on the marriage equality bill yesterday. It passed 331 to 225, a resounding yes in favor of equality. This makes France the 13th country in the world to legalize same sex marriage. While it has passed both houses of Parliament, there may be some procedural hurdles to jump before becoming law, but most the people have spoken and that has the most weight.  That being said, bigots were still planning on a march this week to protest, despite losing the vote in Parliament.  Whatever, they’re totally on the wrong side of history and we all know it.

Le Manif Pour Tous*

I wanted to title this post “Crowd of Bigots Descends on Paris, Mucks up Tourist Destinations” but I figured that’d be too mean. Oh wait.

haters to the left at concordeApparently, it’s never too early to teach hate.

This past weekend, some friends of mine were in town from London. We did some of the tourist sights: the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Tuileries, Invalides. Unfortunately, we left off the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Elysees for Sunday. Turns out, the bigots (oh, I’m sorry, should I call them gay marriage opponents?) were having a parade.

Something like 300,000 people came out in support of hatred, despite the absolutely freezing weather. Lovely. One of the more appalling signs I saw (and could translate, odds are there was a lot more offensive stuff) was “Children are not a right”, opposing adoptions for gay couples. I also especially enjoyed the quartet of priests in full collar for obvious reasons.

The three of us turned to each other and unanimously decided to spend money in a non-French, gay friendly business, so of course we ended up in the Starbucks across the road from the Louvre. Take that, bigots.

*Ironically, the name of this march was Le Manif Pour Tous or “the Demonstration For All”. Nothing says inclusivity like shitting on a minority.

There was a massive demonstration yesterday in Paris against gay marriage yesterday. Organizers say it was attended by over 800,000 protesters, but the BBC puts it somewhere around 330,000. Currently, gay couples have the right to a civil union pact, which gives them similar rights to being married. Separate but equal, right? When Francois Hollande won the presidency last year, he did so on the promise of equal marriage and adoption rights for gays and lesbians.

Turns out, the right-wing and the religious are going to fight him on this. The “traditionalists”. Even the liberal and left-wing French people I’m talking to have issues on this. They keep saying things like “France is a Catholic nation”. Adoption, surrogacy, and in vitro fertilization is apparently a bridge too far. They think kids need a mother and a father. How dare the government take away “mother” and “father” from official paperwork in favor of something like “parent 1” and “parent 2”.

I am so fucking angry and heartbroken about this I’m shaking. For whatever reason, Europe is looked on as being saner and more progressive on gay rights, but every now and then you see that they’re just as fucked up as we Americans are.

Organizers of the march stressed they weren’t preaching hatred against homosexuals. Yeah, you just want to legally discriminate against someone who is different from you. Think of the children? Sure. Children raised by gays or lesbians aren’t harmed by it, except by hateful bastards such as yourself. And if your argument against LGBT couples adopting is based on the fact that a man and a woman are both necessary for conception, than hoo boy, as an anthropologist I get to call bullshit. Humans have been raising kids in all sorts of different configurations for as long as the species has been around.

This rally is going to have massive repercussions. People take demonstrations seriously here in France; the anti-equality crowd won a big PR battle today. I hope Hollande sticks to his guns on this issue.

Marriage Equality for All!

16 May

I know, I’m late to the party. But I still have all sorts of FEELINGS on the whole matter. Mostly, pride. Once again, Barack Obama proves that he totally deserves my vote.

Of course, this historic announcement is tempered by a bit of cynicism and reality. The inestimable Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine lays it all out.

On the whole, I’m still pretty positive about the whole thing. I mean, as a cisgendered woman with no real interest in marriage, I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but I can recognize the steps forward and cheer anyways.
